Things liek weight and strength (which I believe both would count on the sliding "scale") do not seem to have much impact on blocking this year, but in the past, anyone under 300 pounds would get literally pushed around.
Many aspects of this game operate off of thresholds, for example in the competitive tier difficulty, we'd want to hit minimum 90 Zone Coverage stat, at which point DBs begin playing significantly better, but from 91-99 there can be diminishing returns.
It's difficult to find recent info on these various thresholds, but it's probably safe to assume that little has changed in recent years. Regardless, stats barely matter -- abilities are everything, especially passive X-factors as regular abilities.
Have you seen this Reddit post from a few days ago?
No I’m a reformed Reddit guy lol. Very interesting. It’s cool to get deeper insight into the abilities but I have to disagree on the conclusion. I know everyone likes to make a big deal about abilities, but I’m not convinced. It’s like I said with edge threat, good cards play good no matter what abilities they have. Unless it’s something crazy like unstoppable force.
I’m a learner and I like to get real deep on things. I’ve been playing madden for years kind of obsessing over figuring out the little things that could potentially give me an edge. That started with abilities, then moved to “tug of war ratings”, then finally to schemes where I probably should have started. What I’ve learned through all of that is, it’s all bullshit, some cards play good, some play bad and it’s most likely because EA has hidden ratings on players.
Ultimately though, scheme is the biggest skill gap between us and pros. It’s the only thing that really matters. There are no offensive abilities that put your guys where the defense isn’t. On the flip side, there are no defensive abilities that will put your guys where the offense wants to go. The abilities are just placebo that is a substitute for actually getting better at the game.
I’m not throwing shade, I drink the koolaid too. But after studying and soul searching, I learned that the people who are really good at Madden are really good because they play it like a full time job and dedicate themselves to learning every little nuance of the game. I’m willing to admit I’m not as good as them because I’m not that invested. And that doesn’t make me angry anymore. Competition is a zero sum game and there is no substitute for knowledge in game that is essentially a fast paced and violent strategy game.
Just my humble opinion.
