I know you said "fairly open", and I don't know what qualifies as "fairly open", but if my receiver has a couple steps on the defender running across the field, I want the ball in the receiver's hands, not at his fingertips. The proper throw in that scenario is a typical lead; you're not trying to slow the receiver down, and you're not trying to get him to extend.
In fact, when it comes to leading, leading a receiver into a RAC catch logically isn't enough, because sometimes you need a receiver to dive for the ball, and that won't get you run-after-the-catch in any scenario. It's a difficult catch to make, but it can also ensure that the pass is out of reach of the defender if your receiver has half-a-step on him.
