I'm not sure how much you know about criminal law. In the statutes that outline the law, there is a description of the offense, whether it is robbery, homicide, kidnapping, arson, etc. Part of that description includes adverbs that state an individual knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully does whatever it is that is outlined in the statute. In order for a prosecutor to secure a conviction, they must satisfy the burden of proof that beyond a reasonable doubt, "an individual knowingly, willingly, unlawfully.... "
Technically committing an offense that you didn't know was against the law isn't illegal. You just have to convince a jury that's the case..
