Like being Vegan, being NMS is about principle.  If you eat meat, even once, you aren't Vegan.  Same goes with NMS, you spent $15, doesn't matter whether you feel it improved your team or not, you spent money on the game.   Also, your analogy makes no sense at all because it's not a fact that you are innocent.  It is a fact that you spent money on the game.  Honestly, you can call yourself whatever you like, just be true to yourself and embrace that you are a pay for play just like most people in Madden.

Our ability to even understand what constitutes "success" in the modern era is tenuous at best.  Again, i'm in danger of demonstrating how old and out of touch i am, but in an online H2H competitive game, i thought winning actually mattered.  Also fun, but in my mind winning is fun -- it's also possible to have fun while losing, but that requires a bit more big picture type thinking.  Most kids seem to have zero heart (or patience).  I'm getting dudes who will quit in the first half, despite being ahead.  Make one bad read, or fail to convert on 4th and whatever... POOF, goner.  On to the next one.

Welcome to Team GrumpGrump: population 2?  The more the merrier.  I want to try and remain pragmatic about my approach to the world, but it can be difficult to even have a discussion about the same topics, let alone hope to play the same game as everyone else.  You can build coins and/or have a great team, but if you want to actually become competent at the game, there aren't any shortcuts.  You have to put in the time to learn what works and what does not.  These things cannot be summarized into a YouTube short.

NMS does not make you a better player or person at all. With that said there is plenty of opportunity to make coins especially with the influx of Zero Chills. If you play the market right I do not see a reason why someone wouldn’t be up 10 plus mill in a few weeks and still have a good team.

Last i checked, Madden costs $69.99 (or more).  EA isn't doling out complimentary copies of the game.  Also, if you invest time into the game, yer no longer "NMS" because time is money.  We're ALL paying for it in one way or another.

I respect your dedication and commitment to actual principles and appreciate what you are stating here, but it's a pretend badge of honor.  Pay to win game mechanics have absolutely no business in online H2H competitive titles.  At least not ones that hope to be fair, balanced and fun.  Cosmetics?  Sure.  Sell us uniform packs or something to keep the game fresh and interesting, but nothing that gives actual in-game advantages to players.

IMO, that's the actual conversation we need to be having -- not trying to split hairs in a feeble attempt to clearly define what "NMS" means to each and every individual.  Appreciate your attempts to reframe the conversation, but we're not going far enough.

I don't disagree at all.  I think NMS title is a joke as well and have stated that in my prior posts several times in this thread.  I also agree on microtransactions, should not have any place in any game not just a competitive one.  There was a time when your initial game purchase gave you everything you could possibly get in the game.  Companies have realized how much they can make with microtransactions though, so they aren't going anywhere.  

My only point about NMS "splitting hairs" as you put it, was that people love to now label themselves.  Whether it be Vegan, Binary, NMS, etc... but then go against the principles of that label yet still try to say they are part of that label.  Just be you and stop trying to label yourselves.

Again, i'm guilty of wading too far into grumpy old man territory, but i could not agree more with basically everything you've stated above.  Apologies for not reading through the entire thread, but i'll try to circle back and better understand the prior comments you've made, as clearly they remain relevant.

Teaching kids that each and every one of them are ultra-special, unique snowflakes that deserve a participation trophy merely for showing up has done a massive disservice to recent generations.  Thank you for continuing to rise above the fray and help direct the conversation in an appropriate direction.  Never thought i'd see the day where being an average, white, heteronormative male placed us in a "protective" class -- apparently that's far too boring.

My old ass appreciated this. I would like to say I never participated in this debate but I once posted at least full page on here about it and then I realized I was arguing semantics and who knows what else by the end of it. Live and learn? Though I swear I’ve learned that Lesson before. YouTube and twitch can be informative and fun but like you I’m not here or anywhere for that matter to replicate someone else’s experience. Us Grumpy old men slowly and yes pragmatically figure it out for our damn selves. As well in agreement with you that we as the community are not focusing our attention where it needs to be to positively influence our game and in turn all of us.

The only place I’m in some disagreement about is the competitive aspect. I’m not sure appealing to the competitive player base is in the best interest of our game, EA or maybe even most of the current player base. A substantial part of the player base is not only not competitive but completely uninterested in watching or participating in that type of gameplay. Most of the new users they would want to add would also not be competitive at least initially or intimated or more “casual” gamers. Many people want pay to play/win. Generally a larger player base is better for everyone but I have mixed feelings in this case. Just trying to be realistic. All of this is opinion based obviously.

LOVE it, especially the end portions where you stated your "disagreement(s)" -- although, i think we may agree, even about this.  I should have done a better job qualifying my personal approach to the game (i.e. that winning is fun).  That being said, i could not agree more, that the game not only should be, but needs to be geared towards casual players, making the barrier to entry less steep.  Although, i'm specifically interested in Ultimate Team game modes, i adore playing virtual GM, but for someone trying learning the basics or to teach the great game of football to the next generation, things need to be fun, easy and approachable.  No matter if you are nine, nineteen or sixty-nine... modern AAA games could and should have features for all ranges and skill levels.  The way i enjoy a game probably isn't going to be the same as what you prefer, or enjoy.

We're all here arguing over definitions of mostly meaningless (made-up) terminology, meanwhile EA is laughing all the way to the bank as they scam not only their community, but also any advertisers dumb enough to work with them.  EA has clearly been juicing their engagement numbers for years -- essentially paying us off with "free" MCS virtual playing cards (oh wait, they're DEF not playing cards, these are simply fun little surprises in a game of skill, no luck or chance involved, riiiight?).  Uff.

The entire business model is based on an outright lie.  Nobody can admit they're running an unregulated casino for kids, that harms shareholders and stock prices and infinite growth.  I understand that the Competitive player base is a small (~1%) subset of the overall Madden community and we should in no way allow them to dictate how this game plays, or feels... sadly, our goals as community (a good simulation football experience) and EA's goals as a for-profit business do not align.
