But totally agreed. Some of the greats , the greatest plays, greatest defenses, would not exist if these ticky tack rules were in place then.
It's all about sponsors, marketing, etc these days. MLB changed the composition of baseballs for crying out loud because not enough HRs were being hit.

Because they are trying what professional sports is trying.....increase offense, increase point scored - from a marketing standpoint, defense is boring and doesn't sell. There's no great mystery here. It's why MLB instituted so many of the rules that it has over the past few years. Look at the NFL - a defender can't sneeze on an offensive player without being flagged......Offense and scoring SELLS.
