There's an algorithm that EA copyrighted which tries to equalize the teams to make the game more competitive. EA insists that they never put it into the MUT code, that it is only for other modes, but most people believe it is in MUT. EA likes to refer to it as "momentum".

It keeps less skilled players or players with worse teams interested in the game (in  the hopes that the longer they stay interested, the more chance they will spend $$$ on in-game content) by keeping the games closer. I ight have missed some points but I tried to cover it as well as I could.
