My original theory as such was disproven yesterday. Perhaps there was an additional condition as well. I had played 19 Solo Battles between Friday and Wednesday, and hadn’t yet touched the Featured Opponent battle. I got one battle  in on Thursday at about 2:00 p.m. When I expected to be able to refresh opponents, I had only the ability to view the Top 100 tab and my own battles progress. I might have to refresh opponents on Wednesday night to carry a full number of opponents into Thursday. Given the other comments here, perhaps the Solo Battles are being closed out so early that most of us could never complete the Thursday Competitive Dailies for Solo Battles.

Yes, you are correct about that. I still think it's safe to say the sets for 89s will allow you to use 86s. I'm 99% sure of that. But I'm not confident in saying 85s will be used to make the first 89s. There's a chance 85s will be used but I'd put it around 50% and I think that chance decreases the longer 88 is the top ovr. That's why I'd focus on 86s if I were prepping for 89s.
