Any time a card like this happens, especially if they are a set, all the stuff to make them will be higher as well so you cant just circumvent a process to spend less. Everyone wants to get in on the pot where they can.

This happens any time an already expensive card gets an upgrade, all the stuff to make them prior goes up in price as well, set pieces or the previous card in general. Thats why PUPs are a godsend and as soon as old cards go to normal prices I swap out my pups for the regular card for later on when this stuff happens. It can be a hassle but you save so much coin.
If you didnt have Gronk at all, it would currently take about 2m coins based on this website prices for all the pieces.
