Thank you for this advice, as it may help others out there. None of these are issues for me.
The problem is that when the CPU runs between the tackles, you can execute precisely-timed hit sticks, and yet not force a fumble. Therefore, the outcome of the game is reduced to the results of random chance. In about 40 seconds total I can score 32 points and deplete 8 of my opponent's points with two possessions each involving a twenty-yard completion run out of bounds, a touchdown completion, and a successful two-point conversion. After executing those flawlessly, I still have 35 points to go on the final level. If I can get the opportunity to strip-sack, I can hack away at that number 12 points at a time. But if the CPU keeps running the ball between the tackles and directly into our CPU-controlled guys, we don't get a lot of forced fumbles. I've had so many times where I've landed crushing hits, and the runningback goes to the ground with the ball well protected. (It's possible this may have something to do with the CPU-controlled ball carriers in question, and perhaps a lack of Hit Power on the part of my lineup, although I haven't had a lot of coins or time to explore alternatives.)
Twice I've lost games because I was a fraction of a tick late on a quarterback strip attempt, and got hit with a Roughing the Passer penalty that awarded a first down on fourth or fifth down: The sort of desperation you fall into when you have to get points on defense, and the CPU plays keep-away.
