ive started to hold it, its worked well for me

Honestly, the USERing for M25 has been absolutely atrocious. I've tried both methods (spamming Triangle), holding, timing... no matter what i've tried, there will be tons of examples where my user defender simply will not react. Then there's other times where i'll make spectacular, flying leaps into the air to pick off a ball i have no business being near. It's wildly inconsistent, as with most everything else about our beloved Madden franchise these days. Timing does seem to matter, but with the potential for lag, it can be difficult to time that. I think of it liek the kicking meter -- even if our timing is "perfect" there will inevitably be some type of variation, which seems to be out of our control.
Would love to hear more experience(s) from folks, I can't be the odd man out here. SOME is definitely user error, or deficiencies by me playing bad, but i refuse to believe all of the issues i'm noticing are from me needing to git gud.

I am still trained to hold Y from the snap. The BS high point, quick snap seams to Jimmy Graham in M17 has ruined me. For the life of me, I can’t get my brain to not hold Y after the ball is snapped
It’s why I am always excited about pick artist getting introduced middle of the year. With PA on your user, you no longer get bad timing INT attempts.
Cant teach this old dog new tricks unfortunately. The amount of bad timing ball hawk penalties I get at the beginning of the year are almost embarrassing.

It's not just you. The reality is the game is crazy broken and what works great today is zero efficient tomorrow. I am one of the very few left that refuse to glitch and a spam H2H for many years. I can tell you with 100% certainty that MUT mode has gotten away from skill and completely leaned to meta plays and upgrades (abilities)

2 things, A) are you using Lurk Artist if it’s a LB? if not, they often won’t react, it is an issue
B) If you hold it too early you will 100% drop it as it’s set to a timer. In old maddens you could hold it non stop and pick it but not anymore. If you hold it when the balls already at you, you’ll also not react. It’s 100% a timing thing which takes practise, but it’s second nature to me now.
It’s also how you’re positioned to the ball path. i.e. if it’s a drag thrown outside of the hashes, as a user you want to be between 2-5 yards underneath the receiver and in a diagonal line closer to the QB than the receiver.
A good way to visualise it is draw imaginary lines on your screen. point A being the QB and point B being the receiver. Now on that diagonal or straight line (dependant if it’s an inside or outside route) you want to be ON that line with your user however a few yards underneath the receiver

Thank you for the extremely detailed suggestions and response. I'm USERing Oren Burks 1AP stack (No Outsiders, MZKO + LurkArtist) or Ray Nitschke 0AP (Selfless X-factor, LurkArtist, Tip Drill + MZKO) both boosted to 98 SPD.
11 picks for Ray (68 H2H games) and 2 for Oren (15 games). It happens, but this running system you describe feels a bit liek everything what EA touches, meaning... inadequate. 🥵
