Frankly, if you’re not indigenous, I don’t feel you get to have a moral high ground over a position on a name alone. There are far more relevant things a person could do to help lift an oppressed people out of a terrible cycle of poverty, but it’s so much easier to think you’re a good person because you use nice words in front of the camera.
Nevertheless, the Patriots and the R-word are clearly not on the same level. There’s also this goofy grammatical issue that makes the use of place-names in some contexts clunky. You can say “The Commanders”, but you can’t say, “The Washington”.
To be fair, and i dont want to derail any further than we have on the political stuff, there was a movement starting to rename patriots. Ironically one of the names they considered was colonials. Major self own lol.
I just wouldnt change what i call my team after 40 years. Regardless of reason. If the patriots relocated (which they almost did, to st louis and hartford at minimum) theres a chance they'd change names/logos etc. id call em the patriots. 🤷
