I can't stand how often I try to make a conservative catch at the sticks, and my receiver falls backward behind the line to gain. I outplay my opponent tactically, and my reward is a loss to RNG.

The catch animations have been particularly bad/unpredictable this year. Lost a game in the event this morning when my user input to possession catch didn’t work so the receiver got KO’d instead of doing the slide/possession catch for a completion.
Also the HB running backwards after contact drives me nuts sometimes. I have a 1st down by 2-3 yds and then the contact makes my HB decide to run backwards 5 yards fo some reason?

It’s a bummer when 90% of the time an on-target ball can be reliably conservative-caught, but when it’s needed most you get a bad animation. Same with bad body position on aggressive catches and that unrealistic and unforgivably stupid hop on would-be RAC catches.
The improper registry of forward progress has been a thing since when I started playing on PS2.
I don’t understand how a simple programmatic logic issue can exist for more than 18 years. I’m sure it was an issue before I played Madden 09.

You nailed it! I think the stupid hop on RAC catches might be the most frustrating animation I’ve ever seen in this game.
I’m not even referring to the forward progress registry, I’m talking about the HB actually running in the wrong direction after contact which is even worse and something I don’t think I’ve seen until this year.

I've definitely seen 'getting spun' for many years. If it were just a stupid animation and forward progress registered as it should, neither of us would even mention it here. Failing to cross the sticks can be game-defining.
You don't see a lot of controversy in the NFL about forward progress line determinations on runners that stay on their feet after contact. If a runner intentionally retreats from their forward progress to find a lane, it's very clear when you watch the video. In a system of judging fraught with the potential for human error, the NFL does a remarkable job with its referee crews. Despite all the advantages computer logic can provide, EA botches this one magnificently.
the RNG animations in this game are truly pure garbage. 80% of the time they make zero sense to the given situation. honestly if you actually pay attention to all the RNG stuff this is the most poorly programmed motion capture game in existence, and it's been the same shit ever since the supposed "better more realistic frostbite engine"
