not switch off player but actually disengage
wondering this too
I saw a video that said SPAM X/A so i think thats the only way
If you are usering a d linemen push the left on the d pad to switch to the coverage. It's annoying because you have to take your thumb off the joystick unless you have an elite controller with the bottom buttons

Don't want to switch off to coverage, is there a way to actually disengage? I've been in situations I've pressed every button and it won't let me disengage once your on a d lineman rushing

Theres a tutorial in the learn the game drills that says they changed how you control Dline you can't just come off a block anymore now your locked in so you can move linemen to close gaps or open gaps. To actually disengage you have to press a/x and that also depends on blockshed I believe.

I'm not sure. I know exactly what you are saying. It's annoying for sure when getting doubled and can't do anything about it.
Take controller..throw at TV.
I saw some comp guys using the substitution screen while making pre play adjustments on defense. They would pull up the screen and it allows them to engage their user into the d line and then disengage off of them pretty much making it so they have an extra blitzer.

That sounds ridiculous. Has to be a better way right?
For the PS5, the X button is suppose to disengage. Key word being suppose. Lol. It worked a lot better before the patch. I'm a D line user as well. I find that if I user a LB I tend to blow coverage and I do the same switch sticking. I find it easier to just hit O when the ball is thrown and I'm on the DB closest to the receiver anyway. But back to the D line, I've also found that if I get "held" sometimes spamming O works just to let the CPU disengage for you. It's not 100% but seems to work when hitting X won't let you disengage. Hope that helps. ✌️

Appreciate the help. Someone else told me it was x as well and it didn't help. Ea really complicated something that was really simple before.
I should've been more clear about why spamming O seems to work:
Seems the CPU knows where you are as a user and hitting circle switches you to another d lineman. In doing so, the original lineman you were using, now controlled by the CPU since you switched players, will disengage on his own then you can switch back to him. Seems when the CPU knows you're using a particular lineman it will hold you more than the CPU controlled linemen. I don't know. That's sure what it feels like in game. Also I should say that most of this is useless in head to head. if you don't get instant pressure online your opponent will most likely carve you up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Lol

yesterdays game i couldnt disengage from a lineman and when i fell down with kobe turner, dudes hutchinson jumped on kobe turners back and wouldnt let him up. should of been a penalty but nope nothing happened. theres other instances i why i wanted to know how to disengage
This game will make you rage so bad. Especially against the CPU. Unable to disengage, defensive assist (L1 PS5) not working like it should, etc.
It's random too, when it happens which is what makes people suspect DDA or something like it. We've all had experiences it seems where suddenly in one game out of several the CPU does incredible things with it's lower OVR team that it won't seem to let you do with your much higher OVR players. Lol. Like your players are suddenly stuck in mud or something. Of course EA gaslights us and says there's no such thing even after admitting to owning the patent on such a thing but swearing it's not in the game....... Lol.
