Double Pass Defense

Ran into 3 bums all in a row trying to run the gun bunch str double pass. All 3 were immediately shut down and quit. I thought I’d share my defense with how common double pass is becoming. 

Defense formation: Dime normal 

Defense play: any Cover 4 

Adjustments:

Shade down to switch to hard flats. 

Pass commit 

On the solo WR side take the slot CB and man him up to that WR. 

User the safety on the bunch side and play the deep route. 

With this setup there are only 3 outcomes.

A. The hard flat will jump and pick off the double pass.

B. The hard flat will tackle the double pass player a second  or two after they catch it.

C. They force a bad pass right at your user.

Cover 1 automatically takes out the trash for me. Like you said, they’ll quit after or they get owned quickly as they ain’t got no fallback. 😂 ✌️

Do Flat Zones have to be set to ZERO ?

Uhhh, I almost never (unless in goalline scenarios) adjust my Hard Flats to zero depth, but once you recognize the various formations that can hit you with the double pass cheese, simply audible over to whatever Man coverage and it'll devour that shit in 9 out of 10 instances.  Can be pretty much anything, as long as it's man -- i would not recommend playing Cover 4 against Double Pass.

I'm SO sick of spotting teams seven points, because i get burned bad on the very first play of the game... although lately i tend to give this shit up against some Stretch run play, due to all my DBs getting pancaked and taken out of the play.  Frustrating that there's zero direct counter to all the Vanguard cheese, but hey, it's late June.  Might as well have eighteen Vanguards on the field for any given play.

I just switch over to simple Cover 2 Man and let my bot defenders do the rest.  In Squads play, we have two dudes run backwards to defend the deep ball and the third immediately rushes the "passer" (the receiver getting the double pass opportunity).  Most dudes just try to bomb it deep, rarely you'll find a guy who hits and underneath out of the Double Pass, but in my experience, it's extremely rare, everyone wants to make the highlight reels.

I would rather play someone that runs it the first play of the game, instead of breaking it out on the last play.. if you run it first play, I’m gonna look for it the rest of the game. If we’ve played 3 and a half quarters and I haven’t seen it, one would assume they aren’t running it. 

The double pass out of gun bunch is pretty easy to spot coming regardless. It’s the one out of pistol that I have gotten beat by, when guys will run a normal scheme all game, and then pull it out on the last play of the game. So infuriating.

Man defense works great if it’s exclusively double pass. However the bunch str formation absolutely fries man defense if they have a little mini scheme built out. I like cover 4 because it an all around good defense. I can lock up the double pass or can react and switch stick to stop other plays they mix in.
