Please Help

I'm really struggling with assigning ability's or getting more bang for my buck because of being handcuffed on limit of AP allowed I see my roster has blue digits on OVR on upgraded cards and for the life of me I don't whether to sub the ones that are not blue for a different player. Every time i go into H2H without fail opposing teams Captains are 90s+ and I can't figure out how to even get one of mine low 90. for example, I'll go to AH and purchase a 88 TOTW and spend 600k in training on it and can't get it to turn blue. Moral of the story if someone could send me a link or thread where i could research how exactly upgrades and X factors work. Thanks again for the patience and info!
