So what's the difference between a fusion player and having the 2 cards separately?

I had AP on Cam and Woolen on both sides of the ball but frankly,.with ULs dropping tomorrow I'm just looking past this crappy Genki promo anyway....

Bro,.I. put Cam.Jordan on D,.and O and tried.  Nothing... can't activate his abilities.. Then put Fusion Davante at WR, Fusion Woolen at CB.... chems still …

I've got a couple fusion cards , blue and red genki chems are activating but not purple.... is there some trick to it? What even does it do?
