To be fair, they aren't all that desirable. Raffles are cool here and there but GG points are nowhere near as valuable as MHC from back in the day.

Greedy? Nobody can buy/sell GG Points, and there is no monetary value associated with them. Taxing GG Points because we're "greedy" doesn't even make sense. The Points removed from circulation don't go into anyone's pocket.
The tax is there as an economic control to help reduce inflation in a closed economy. If you have lots of ways to earn GG Points and fewer ways to remove some that are currently in circulation, everyone would have thousands of GG Points. Then people would complain about how many GG Points are needed to win an auction, win a raffle, buy an icon, etc.
