I can't stop the run effectively and notice opponents not being able to must of the time either. Right now - especially if you have 2 good backs - you can basically run the ball and the clock all game long.
Go in practice mode, and try blitzing played out of 3-4, and 4-3. The contains work really well on all run plays
Try 3-4 pinch buck o. If your opponent is running stretch, use contains
4-3 defense. Outsheds sheds on your edges. Jonathan Allen is a monster. Shapeshifter at dt2 qb spy. Qb contain when necessary
Dollar or Cover 4 and shade down and pinch and crash line.

I'm with everyone else who is suggesting 3-4 Odd as the primary run defense formation to rely on. However, your USER is absolutely going to be key towards stopping the run. It'll often be up to you to make a play, or help get a stop. Defense is ridiculously difficult right now, your opponent is going to score points. I'm trying to make them work for every yard, shutting down the run is absolutely essential, force them to play the game... force them to pass and hopefully make a mistake.
I'm a huge fan of Pinch Buck 0, but Man coverage over top can be notoriously inconsistent and unreliable. All of my corners are decently tall, fast (90+ SPD) and have 90-95+ MCV, yet still get absolutely cooked. Match is decent, but can give up big plays. Cover 4 Drop should have both Safeties in run fits, so their first step is down / toward the play. You can blitz all linebackers if you're confident they're running (right on D-pad, down on right analogue stick) and then control a weak side Safety and be prepared to come crashing down on the ball carrier. You absolutely have to prevent the ball carrier from getting to the sideline on stretch run plays. Heck, even Cover 4 Drop from Dime 1-4 (Dollar) can often defend the run well, but I'm struggling a bit lately and having to use heavier formations to get more / bigger bodies on the field.
Good luck. Learning to control the clock, often playing Gooch Ball, will potentially be your best defense. Try to score before half and get the ball back to double up if all else fails. We all need a little help on defense right now, ESPECIALLY if Joe Burrow ends up getting Gunslinger.
All I know is that Guess Run in any direction works sometimes until it gives up six. Gibbs and Dickerson on theme teams are very fast and hard to stop on first contact.
If your opponent is taking the coin flip approach to offensive scheme and hoping to win on the odds, you’re going to have to do the same if they keep flipping heads and are closing on your end zone.
Nickel Single Mug 1 LB Dog, stops just about every thing for me. The gap angles are the most effective out of this defensive set for me.
A couple of things to consider with run D:
- Run fits - Cover 4 is better for inside runs (both safeties are in run fits), cover 2 is better for outside runs (outside CB's are in run fits)
- Cover 3 is really not good at stopping the run this year I've noticed, especially inside runs. Your force defenders always run themselves out of the play entirely, leaving you with almost no second level defenders left to pursue.
- Personnel - You need to match personnel with offenses for better shed and run defense animations. For example, if you play dollar/dime against a 2 WR personnel, you are going to get dominant pancake animations because you have 6 DB's on the field. 2 WR's = Base/Big Nickel, 3 WR's = Nickel/Dime, 4 WR's = Dime. You can get away with playing base against 3 WR sets if you are comfortable with a Safety covering a WR and LB covering TE on passing plays.
- You can crash your DL different ways to modify the run fits of your linebackers. For example, often if you crash your DL away from where the run is likely to go, your linebackers will automatically adjust their run fits to the other side, making their pursuit angles better.
Lastly, I like to user the FS on run downs to add another potential pursuit player and let the CPU handle the LB's pursuing. They get better animations against blockers and and often times I use them to create space for me to get free tackles.
If you're looking for simple plays that are reliable - Nickel 4-2-5 Cover 2 / Cover 4 and the Nickel 3-3-5 Mint (Raiders PB) cover 2/4/6.
