I believe you have to collect the evo tokens. You can't evolve a player to a rarer tier (for example you can't evolve a rare to an epic).

Now I'll give an example

There are the base epic players and then there is the new, higher overall ultimate kickoff epic players. Basically, you can select an ultimate kickoff epic player to use to upgrade the normal epic players. Then, you use the required amount of evo tokens, click confirm and the base epic player will become the same overall as the ultimate kickoff player. I believe you can do this by clicking on the player card you want to upgrade and then clicking on the button that is below the traits icon that I think says "upgrade." Hope this helps.
