Ive been playing MUT since Madden 20 and after Madden 23 its felt like the game isn't worth grinding. you have to pay money to get packs with a decent chance to get something and the challenges have been giving things like 91+ bnd packs for doing all the challenges while back in Madden 22 you could get full 99 bnd champs for getting 90 stars it's becoming more pay to win every year.
You def can play/build a NMS squad to be relatively competitive, but at the core...yes...this is very much a "pay to have a giant advantage" game.
Before I get all the crazed NMS people in here saying you can build a god squad being NMS, you are 100% right, but I don't feel like spending that much time/effort/energy into doing so. If you do, more power to you.
With all the new high end cards getting heavily discounted AP abilities, it can feel like a chore trying to take a more budget squad into a H2H game and feel you are on even ground. That's what EA wants and is aiming for though. They want you to feel the need to upgrade and the need for coins. You bleed out a lot of the easy ways to acquire coins/players, and EA then hopes you rush to the points store and open your wallet.

The folks who constantly push the "scheme above team, brah" type nonsense are doing everyone a disservice. I can't ever tell if they're straight up delusional or just high on smelling their own farts, or what... while it is somewhat possible to field a competitive squad without pumping in a dime of your own funds, the sheer time it will take to field a "reasonable" (whatever that means) roster is going to be a steep uphill climb. Better hope you are basically unemployed and don't have much of a life outside of MUT.
Not to mention, the game-knowledge required to cobble together a team on a budget is also fairly steep.
