Smith orchestrated two fourth-quarter comebacks in the 2011 Divisional Championship. When the ball was in his hands that way, he often made plays. But he’s a “game manager” because his passing game options were far less than the equal of what Manning Light or other Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks enjoyed.
uThere is nothing wrong with being a “game manager” . Brad Johnson and Trent Delfer won Super Bowls as game managers . The difference between them and franchise guys is they aren’t relied on to carry teams and win games . Simply don’t lose it .
Smith had a nice career , but he was a game manager at best . He had 2 seasons where he throw over 20 TD passes . He had two seasons where he threw over 3500 yards . This over a 14 year career. He was never a top 5 QB in this league , maybe top 10 you can argue . nothing wrong with that . He was solid , but he was no franchise QB
For comparison . There is another QB that played at the same time as Smith , won a super Bowl , had 7 seasons above 3500 yards passing , with multiple 4000 yard season and threw 50 more TD’s in his career . Same length of time in the league. But is considered by many a game manager as well . Guess who ?
