Initially I struggled with the Super Plays House Rules event, winning less than 50% of the time. I found it an absolute cheese-fest. Eventually I got my thirty wins for the best reward available, but I continued after that because Solos had gotten so stale, and I still wanted to collect all of the Mega Energy Cell tokens.
Having finished that task, I have been enjoying House Rules more than before, in part because the wins don't matter much, and the losses don't matter. Because of that, I can play the mode and handle each opponent as they come. Mid-blitz cheese? I get to work on my protections and blitz bluff reactions. Spamming the stretch runs? I get to work on my pre-play adjustments and run fits. Goal line practice? Offense or defense, I don't get near enough of that in any other mode, but the necessity of falling short of the endzone after an early big play guarantees practicing that scenario.
And it's now that I realize that if winning early and often didn't have long-term implications, I wouldn't care so much about the pervasiveness of Madden cheese. The negative play experiences last far less time in this mode than they do in every other competitive mode, and with more practice in situations that have often given me trouble (cheesy but higher-risk route combinations on third- or fourth-and-long), I feel like I'll soon be returning to competitive modes with a clue how to play this iteration of Madden.
