Playing players out of positions

I am gonna try a right tackle at right guard, his attributes are way higher however his overall goes down. I'm not entirely sure how that works because his attributes stay the same. Anyways, does this actually make a difference on how he plays or is it only for chemistry's and team overall rating?

The physical skills stay the same, but it dumbs the player out due to ea dropping their awareness
