Route tech not working?

In regs and franchises, route tech always activates and is OP. I put it on someone on my mut team to beat man coverage, and it hasn’t lighted up once. Is it because I’m on current gen?

Check your opponent's abilities. One step ahead negates Route tech, although I don't remember if it still lights up or not. Also it doesn't light up vs zone
