Some of my buddies are getting back into squads and only have Xbox one. What abilities are you current gen players liking? Are they the same as new gen or do they differ quite a bit?

Different, but same principles, I'd start with next gen abilities and just experiment more than normal to find what works for you, check the ability tier list and start there, then go along with ability discounts to easily try some others out.
