Why am I cut sticking not hit sticking, am I clicking the wrong  button

If you push the right trigger down it cut sticks and if you push it up it hit sticks

FYI, if you're working on solos, cut sticks give the same credit as a hit stick, and are often easier to do. Also, please make sure that you have tacking turned on aggressive, which makes those cut/hit sticks much easier to achieve.
